CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

While Gilly made waffles, Colt searched for a key that might open his grandfather’s filing cabinet.

Colt went through the keys hanging on the kitchen hooks, but no, those belonged to him and Aunt Jewel alone. He went to the kitchen junk drawer. He tried to get it open, but it was too stuffed with plastic bags, tools, flashlights, and Chinese food menus. Why did they even keep those around? It was why God invented FoodWheel.

He had to take everything out of the drawer to rummage around in it. “You know, if you really wanted to hide this Fate Blade, you should just put it in a junk drawer.”

Gilly lifted the waffle iron lid and transferred a golden waffle onto a plate. “It’s one of the universal constants—a junk drawer. Let’s eat!”

Colt ate the most delicious waffles of his life, with lots of butter and maple syrup. They were so good! Gilly nearly broke her face smiling as she watched him eat.

They’d just finished when they heard a knock. It was only a few minutes after sunset.

“Do you want to let our vampire in?” Colt asked.

Gilly went to the door that led down to the basement. She opened the door.

Eliza stood there with her hat in her hand. She looked exactly the same as she had the night before. An embarrassed blush colored her cheeks. “Yes. Hello. Is it okay if I join you?”

“Sure, Eliza, come in. Can I get you anything to drink?” Gilly blanched. “I didn’t mean I was…I meant something that wasn’t…you know. Blood.”

Eliza smiled. “I won’t need to eat for a few days. You needn’t worry. And if you’ll excuse me, miss, I’d rather not talk about my…condition.”

Both girls were being so awkward.

Colt swooped in. “Do you need some coffee?”

“Yes, I’d love a cup.” Eliza moved to sit at the table. She was upright and rigid. “Actually, along with a dry red wine, coffee is a bit of a vice for me. I like cigarettes as well, though I’ve learned they have fallen out of fashion. I cannot abide this vaping business.” The vampire paused. “I try not to smoke too much. To be honest, it always seemed too lascivious. I know, that sounds so droll, after all I’ve been through. After all the horrific things I’ve done.”

Gilly stood halfway between the table and the kitchen. She had a mystified look on her face. She clearly had no idea how to react to that.

Colt finally found the plastic Tupperware with all the extra keys. “So, Eliza, we can’t stay here. Vincent Isaac is going to send people here, and I don’t want anyone ruining my house. Do you have any idea where the Fate Blade might be?”

Eliza shook her head. “No, but I’m certain Vincent didn’t have it when I left. I spoke with some of the Lyran staff at Vincent’s mansion. They believe the Fate Blade is in Firestone Alley, but they aren’t sure where. There is a temple in the old part of the city.
